New scholarship commemorates Matthew Dowdle

October 15, 2020

To commemorate the late Matthew Dowdle’s contributions to labour relations, the Society of United Professionals and Power Workers’ Union have each donated $25,000 to a scholarship fund that will support students in the University of Toronto’s Industrial Relations and Human Resources faculty.

Dowdle, who most recently served as Vice President Labour Relations for Ontario Power Generation, was an exemplary professional who managed to bridge chasms between management and unions in the most challenging negotiations. While Society representatives were always on the other side of the negotiating table, Dowdle’s sincerity, compassion and work ethic were deeply respected by his union counterparts.

Dowdle passed away suddenly on March 3, 2020 at the age of 41. Matt leaves his wife Ali and children Britain, Benson and Berkley. In their obituary, the Dowdle family requested donations to Jack.org, which seeks to improve Canada’s approach to mental health.
