Society leaders promoted nuclear at lobby days

February 13, 2019

Society leaders, including President Scott Travers, participated in federal and provincial lobby days late last year to promote the nuclear industry that employs approximately half of Society members.

On Parliament Hill Travers, along with Mike Gade (Bruce Power Local VP), Sarah Beirnes (Bruce Power Local UD), Rebecca Caron (OPG Local UD), Paul Choiniere (OPG Local UD), joined the Canadian Nuclear Association lobby day. In addition to educating Members of Parliament about the value of the industry to the national economy and Canada’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, representatives discussed Bill C-68, which would amend the federal environmental assessment laws that impact the industry.

At Queen’s Park, Travers and Caron were joined by Kinectrics Local Vice President Elan Thomas at the Ontario Nuclear Advantage’s lobby day. With significant turnover after the June 2018 provincial election, this event was an opportunity for the industry to meet and educate Members of Provincial Parliament. Among the representatives Society delegates met was Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry John Yakabuski, and the Minister of Energy’s Chief of Staff and Stakeholder Relations Advisor.
