Society contributed to Hurricane Dorian relief

October 2, 2019

In the wake of Category 5 storm Hurricane Dorian, the Society’s Executive Board made a $5,000 contribution on behalf of members to Canadian charity Global Medic’s relief efforts.

Making landfall in the Bahamas on September 1, Dorian caused massive flooding on the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. The storm killed 43 people and affected 76,000 others.

Global Medic has more than 20 years of experience deploying rapid response teams to disaster sites and is often the first or one of the first relief organizations to provide assistance to an affected region. In consultation with those on the ground, Global Medic identified an immediate need for clean water, food and shelter. With financial contributions from the Society and others across Canada, Global Medic was able to setup a water purification system, distribute water purifiers to households, and provide food and hygiene items.
