On behalf of the Society’s Professionals with Disabilities Committee (PDC), we would like to recognize March 1 as International Wheelchair Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness about accessibility, inclusivity, and equal opportunity for people who use wheelchairs. For many, a wheelchair represents independence, participation, mobility, and freedom.
Wheelchair users have achieved incredible physical feats, from record-breaking marathons to climbing mountains and skydiving. Yet, significant barriers remain in everyday life. Inaccessible workplaces, buildings without proper ramps, elevators, or doorways, and workstations that fail to accommodate wheelchair users continue to limit opportunities. Transportation challenges, including limited accessible vehicles and difficult commuting conditions, create additional obstacles—especially during winter months when snow and ice can make sidewalks unusable.
Beyond physical barriers, social challenges persist. Misconceptions about capabilities, stigma, and exclusion can impact mental health, job opportunities, and a sense of belonging. True accessibility goes beyond infrastructure—it requires inclusive attitudes and environments where everyone can participate fully.
International Wheelchair Day is also a moment to reflect on the spaces we move through each day. Are entrances truly accessible? Do doors, washrooms, and workspaces accommodate everyone? Are colleagues included in conversations and gatherings?
Creating meaningful change takes awareness, advocacy, and action from employers, communities, and individuals alike.
On March 1st, let’s celebrate what wheelchairs make possible while recommitting to removing barriers and building a more accessible, inclusive world for all.
