The Society is proud to once again support the educational pursuits of our Members’ and Pensioners’ children and grandchildren as they attend a post-secondary institution of higher learning. A good education is the cornerstone of helping the next generation reach their full potential so that they can both secure good jobs and help to improve our society as a whole.
This year the Society, in conjunction with the Pensioners’ Chapter, awarded 32 scholarships to assist with the costs of pursuing post-secondary education. The Society gave out 10 scholarships worth $1,500 and 20 for $1,000. One of the Pensioners' Chapter scholarships is worth $1,500 while the other is worth $1,000.
More than 150 students applied for the 32 scholarships. Winners were scored based on their current volunteer work, a personal statement describing the applicant's interest in impacting their community or broader society, as well as a short essay on one of four topics related to the labour movement and role of unions. Qualified applicants were assessed by a committee after applicants’ names had been removed to ensure objectivity.
The next round of scholarship applications will open in June. Further details will be announced through the Society's newsletter and on the web site.
