Society leadership and local representatives were in Ottawa for the Canadian Nuclear Association conference. The annual event is an excellent opportunity for networking and education on the benefits of unionization for energy professionals. The CNA is always an excellent opportunity to meet with players in the nuclear industry and discuss how we can advance our mutual interests.
Society President Rebecca Caron spoke on an industry panel with Jeff Parnell of the PWU, Marc Arsenault from the Building Trades and j’Amey Bevan of the Boilermakers about the pathway to securing a skilled energy workforce for the future. To build this workforce we need government to properly fund education at all levels, from elementary to post-secondary and across the trades. We also need to be creating the conditions for women to participate fully in the sector by recognizing the barriers that exist particularly to women. This means providing affordable childcare, flexible work arrangements, and parental leave policies that don’t hinder career development.
The Society once again hosted an exhibition booth where members were able to talk to attendees about the Society’s work and the benefits of union membership to both workers and employers.
