Society Recognizes Day of Mourning

May 13, 2025

On April 28, we recognize the Day of Mourning. Senior leaders from the Society spoke at various workplaces and job sites across the province to mark the day.

The Day of Mourning is a day to remember those who have lost their lives in workplace accidents, or suffered an illness or injury on the job. Workplace fatalities and injuries are still too commonplace. In March, a Toronto Hydro worker died in what was supposed to be a routine maintenance call. In the past year, there were nearly 200 workplace fatalities reported in Ontario. This is unacceptable.

With sorrow, we are reminded that there is still much more progress to be made to ensure that workers arrive home safely at the end of the workday. Employers must ensure that workers are properly trained and have access to protective equipment. We need robust, well-trained Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees. The government has important tools that must be utilized: legislation, education, and enforcement. There also needs more health and safety inspectors to conduct more safety inspections.

We all have a role to play in strengthening occupational health and safety. Today we renew our commitment to this important work.
