Society president Rebecca Caron spoke at the May 7 government press conference announcing the latest phase in the development of the new Bruce C reactor.
Ontario announced that it has directed the IESO to enter into a cost-sharing and recovery agreement, which will enable Bruce Power to move forward with predevelopment activities including engagement with First Nations and communities, workforce planning, and pre-construction and site preparation planning.
Speaking at the press conference, President Caron welcomed the announcement saying, “As the union representing the professional workers behind Ontario’s energy system, including at Bruce Power and the IESO, we see every day the strength of the skilled workforce that powers this province. Ontario’s nuclear sector has been built by dedicated professionals whose knowledge and commitment have earned global respect. Our members are proud to contribute to that work and to help advance the next chapter of clean energy development in Ontario. The Society of United Professionals looks forward to continued collaboration with government, industry partners, Indigenous communities, and workers across the sector as this project moves forward.”
Through this agreement, the IESO will share in the costs incurred by Bruce Power to continue advancing key predevelopment activities which will occur alongside the work currently underway for completion of the federal Impact Assessment and receipt of a Licence to Prepare Site from the federal Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
