Society President Joins Labour to Talk Tariffs in Washington

March 7, 2025

Society President Rebecca Caron joined the Canadian Labour Congress delegation, and several Canadian Premiers in Washington, D.C. in early February. The delegation joined American labour leaders to discuss with representatives of the Trump Administration regarding the damage the U.S. tariffs will have on workers and industries on both sides of the border.

The meeting focused on the economic consequences of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods and services, emphasizing how these measures threaten jobs, increase costs for businesses and consumers, and weaken the long-standing economic partnership between Canada and the United States.

As part of broader efforts to push back against tariffs, labour leaders will make the case for policies that strengthen the economic ties that support good jobs on both sides of the border.

Additionally, President Caron attended two emergency meetings of the Canadian Council. The Canadian Labour Congress is currently working on an assessment of the impacts of the Trump tariffs on labour, and is assembling a package of actions that government can take to mitigate the negative effects of tariffs on Canadian workers and households.
