Ontario Announces Plans to Build New Isotope Hot Cell

December 16, 2024

On November 8, the Society attended a press conference by the Ontario government and Bruce Power where they announced that they will be building a new hot cell in Bruce County to process cancer-fighting medical isotope lutetium-177, which is used as a targeted therapy, including for prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumours. This will take some of the production work that was being done abroad and will instead have it done right here in Ontario.

Ontario is a world leader in life-saving medical isotopes, and the Society is happy to see progress being made towards seeing the full life cycle of isotope production be completed in Canada. We look forward to seeing more details from the government on the full productive capacity of the new facility.
