The Society’s Equity Committee Chairs gathered on May 28 at Society Headquarters for a day of collaboration during what was coined the Equity Committee Summit. A full day of presentations and workshop programming was organized to facilitate knowledge sharing and organizational planning.
Community Organizer Sang-Hun Mun from the Industrial Accident Victims’ Group of Ontario (IAVGO) Community Legal Clinic was a guest speaker. Sang-Hun spoke about the issues facing injured workers, systemic problems with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), and community-led strategies for delivering real change for injured workers.
The conversation was timely as 3,600 WSIB workers were newly on strike, sounding the alarm on claim backlogs, the handout of billions of dollars in employer rebates, and American outsourcing.
At the Equity Committee Summit, the Society’s six Equity Committees began to explore the equity gains made by other unions in collective bargaining. The committees are working together to establish recommendations for the Society around changes that can be achieved through collective bargaining to increase equity in the workplace.
