Why do professional employees choose unions?

April 14, 2025

Story provided by the Society organizers

It’s always about workplace issues!

According to Statistics Canada, unionized workers benefit from better pay equity and consistent wage growth, particularly in high-skill professions. Unionized professionals in Canada, on average, earn 20-30% more than their non-unionized peers. Unionized employees are also less likely to face arbitrary terminations and report higher job satisfaction and better work-life balance due to negotiated agreements that limit excessive overtime and ensure fair workload distribution.

Non-union professionals generally consider taking on a unionization campaign when there are significant workplace issues. Have you ever spoken to a non-union colleague in your workplace or at another organization about issues like…

  • lack of job security or access to permanent positions,
  • lack of consultation around policy development and implementation,
  • unpaid and excessive overtime,
  • not having retirement and/or pension benefits,
  • lack of opportunities for career advancement,
  • lack of fairness and transparency in the workplace, or
  • fearing personal reprisal when raising professional concerns with management because they lack workplace representation?

As a Society member, you are able to connect non-unionized professionals with an Organizer.

Our union is growing, and the Society is always looking for opportunities to speak with non-unionized professionals who are thinking about joining a union.
