Watch the incredible presentations from Empowerment Day 3.0

August 28, 2023

Empowerment! United in Equity is an annual conference hosted by the Society's equity committees: Indigenous Relations Circle, Sisters United, Pride & Solidarity, Young Professionals Network, Coalition of Racialized Professionals, and the Professionals with Disabilities Committee.

This year's conference had incredible presentations:

  • Kim Wheatley, gave the Indigenous opening and spoke on reconciliation, decolonization and the Indigenous experience in the place we now call Canada.
  • Kat Owens, project director for LEAF’s (Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund) Reproductive Justice Project who spoke on the state of reproductive rights in Canada, particularly in the context of the Roe decision.
  • Michelle Leong Francis talked about how to tackle discrimination in the workplace, and how to promote workplaces where recruitment, retention and promotion advance the interests of equity-seeking groups.
  • Tara Patterson, CUPE’s Senior Human Rights Officer, and Lex Konnelly, a CUPE Local 3902 member and a Ph.D. Candidate in the departments of Linguistics and Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto, spoke on negotiating for trans inclusion and gender diversity.
  • Marco Pasqua, spoke on Accessible Workplaces: Supporting People with Disabilities In-Person and Online.
