EMAIL PREMIER FORD TO STOP LEGAL AID CUTS
The Ford government announced in its April 2019 budget that Legal Aid Ontario would see a 30% cut in provincial government funding retroactive to April 1, 2019. This amounts to $133 million. Immediately after the cut was announced the Society responded with a media release calling for a reversal of this wrongheaded decision that will result in mounting costs and delays within the court system.
The cuts are premised on false information. From the get go, Premier Doug Ford and Attorney General Caroline Mulroney have claimed that in spite of more funding LAO is serving fewer clients. That claim is totally false. Through detailed research, the Society was able to publicly contradict these claims at a Queen's Park news conference, which resulted in favourable media coverage for the Stop Legal Aid Cuts campaign.
