In July, federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan announced that he would be stepping down. He has been replaced by MP Steven MacKinnon, who previously served as the government’s House Leader.
During Minister O’Regan’s tenure, the government passed paid sick leave legislation and anti-scab legislation. Both of these were major priorities of the Canadian Labour Congress and other labour organizations. Although, there is always more that needs to be done to strengthen the position of working people in our economy, the Society has largely been pleased with the Minister’s work in the file. We wish him well as he moves on to new projects.
Society President Michelle Johnston has begun reaching out to the new Minister to develop and grow our relationship as we continue to ensure that workers remain front-and-centre of all efforts to grow the country’s economic prosperity.
