Society Staff Researcher Doly Begum elected to Ontario Legislature

June 20, 2018

The Society is proud to inform members that Society Staff Researcher Doly Begum was elected as Member of Provincial Parliament in her riding of Scarborough Southwest with 45% of the vote.

She is the first Bangladeshi candidate to become a member of any legislative body in the North American and she will now represent her community in the Ontario Legislature.

The Society first worked with Doly when she was the chief coordinator of the province-wide Keep Hydro Public campaign that successfully stopped the privatization of Toronto Hydro and Wasaga Distribution. She has been a principled advocate for evidence-based energy policy and we are confident that she will bring those same principles to Queen’s Park.

While the Society is sad to lose her services, we look forward to having a strong ally with experience in the workings of the energy sector at the Legislature. We will be working closely with her to advocate for the issues that impact our members.
