Society secures future of Saugeen Shores doctor recruitment program

June 24, 2019

As Saugeen Shores works to recruit a new doctor for the community, the Society of United Professionals has agreed to a new five-year lease on the condominium that will house the next local physician. Town Council is expected to approve the nominal $1 per year lease at its meeting tonight.

“We live, work and are raising our families in this community so we are as invested as anyone in securing a new family doctor who will keep everyone healthy and strong,” said Mike Gade, Vice President of the Society of United Professionals’’ 1,200-member Bruce Power Local. The Bruce Power Local represents about a quarter of Bruce Power employees, including engineers, supervisors and other professional workers.

Gade is scheduled to speak to Saugeen Shores Town Council at its Committee of the Whole session tonight, June 24, 2019, just after 6:30PM.

The lease is for Unit 6 at 190 Morpeth St. This is one of two Port Elgin condominiums the Society of United Professionals (SUP) leases to the Town to attract and support local doctors. Unit 6 is where doctors considering a long-term relationship with the community will stay, as well as student medical residents and physicians visiting for short-term work. Unit 5, for which there is already a lease in place, will be used as the permanent home of the next local physician and their family.

In addition to the condominiums, SUP also provides two houses in Kincardine to that town’s physician recruitment program. The four properties, each provided to their respective town’s program for $1 per year, are valued at an estimated $2 million. SUP also pays the annual property tax bill for each property.

“We work hard to keep good jobs at Bruce Power that can support local families for this generation and the next,” said Gade. “Part of building a career and family here is knowing that you have access to local health care, starting with your family doctor.”

“I’m proud we are able to give back in this way to the community that has done so much for our members.”
