Society calls for improved safety measures at Ontario courthouses

September 25, 2025

On July 31, 2025, Tyresse Roundsky was fatally shot during court proceedings at the youth centre on Wapekeka First Nation. In response, the Society sent a joint letter to Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey calling on the province to take action to enhance courthouse security across the province. In particular, the letter calls for the implementation of front entrance screening and security presences in all Ontario courts, with specific attention to northern and remote communities where security gaps are most common. The Society views courthouse security as an occupational health and safety issue, and we call on the provincial government to fulfill its duties under the Occupational Health and Safety Act by strengthening court security.

The joint letter was submitted alongside the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) and the Ontario Crown Attorneys’ Association.

It can be read here.
