Society Adds Member Voices to Ontario Budget Submission

February 13, 2024

The Society has once again submitted our budget recommendations to the Ontario government. Every year, the Society ensures that our members’ interests are well represented by contributing to the public budget consultation process. This process, in addition to our regular lobbying of the government, ensures that our members get the best possible outcomes from each provincial budget.

For our legal Local members, the Society’s budget submission makes several recommendations to both increase and stabilize the funding for Legal Aid Ontario. We also argue that the province needs to end restrictions that limit LAO’s ability to handle immigration and refugee cases. Finally, the Society is calling on the government to re-open Toronto borough courthouses and ensure that our existing courthouses are adequately staffed and made safe.

On energy, in this year’s submission the Society recommends that the provincial government continue to invest in new, publicly owned, CANDU nuclear power and continue to electrify the Ontario economy. To help tackle the largest sources of emissions the government should invest in the manufacturing of electric vehicles and create smart incentives for the purchase of both commercial and personal vehicles, while investing in greening the heating of our buildings. New CANDU reactors also mean new good jobs, not only for Society members, but throughout the entire supply chain.
