Rebecca Caron is President of the Society of United Professionals, IFPTE Local 160, and a nationally recognized leader in labour relations, clean-energy policy, and organizational growth. With more than 15 years of experience as a labour activist and executive leader, she has guided the Society through a period of significant expansion, heightened public influence, and strategic renewal.
Under Rebecca’s leadership, the Society has grown to more than 11,000 members and expanded beyond Ontario for the first time in its history. She oversaw the successful organization of management professionals from the City of Saskatoon, marking the Society’s first bargaining unit in Saskatchewan and enabling its acceptance into the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour. This milestone reflects a broader growth strategy positioning the Society as a national union for highly skilled professionals across energy, legal, and technical sectors
Rebecca has significantly elevated the Society’s voice in public policy and at international forums. She regularly represents the union on national panels addressing long-term energy planning, workforce development, and clean-energy transition. As a panelist at COP30 in Brazil, she contributed to global discussions on nuclear energy’s role in decarbonization, ensuring that workers’ perspectives were meaningfully included in climate policy debates
In 2024, Rebecca represented the Society at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, where she spoke on the intersection of climate action, equity, and the critical role of women in addressing the climate crisis. Her leadership has consistently emphasized the importance of inclusive, worker-centred solutions to complex global challenges.
Professionally, Rebecca developed her career at Ontario Power Generation through senior technical and leadership roles, including work in Radiation Protection and Reactor Inspection & Maintenance. This experience grounds her policy advocacy in operational reality, informing her work on the safe, reliable deployment of low-carbon electricity systems. She brings a worker-centred perspective to international and governmental discussions on energy transition, emphasizing the integration of public safety, workforce development, and high-skill unionized labour. Rebecca is widely regarded as a credible and respected voice on nuclear energy as a cornerstone of Ontario’s and Canada’s clean-energy and decarbonization strategies.
Rebecca’s commitment to equity and workplace fairness is reflected in tangible outcomes. She was part of the Society’s first bargaining team to secure paid domestic violence leave, a landmark achievement that set a new standard within the union. In recognition of her leadership, she received the Equity Advocate Award at the 2024 Build a Dream Awards.
