Continuing the Society’s advocacy and education work surrounding the importance of nuclear power, MPPs from the Ontario NDP toured the Nuclear Waste Management Organization's (NWMO) Demonstration and Discovery Centre on Aug. 25. Attendees learned about the incredible work that Society members do to ensure that nuclear waste is managed safely.
Thanks to the work of our members at the NWMO, Ontario is a world leader in nuclear spent fuel management. Every gram of spent fuel is accounted for, and the NWMO's siting process is consent-based, giving municipal residents and First Nations the agency to veto the storage project if they aren't satisfied with project safety and community benefits.
The Society would like to thank the NWMO Society members who shared their knowledge during the tour. And thanks to Catherine Fife, MPP for Kitchener—Waterloo, Jamie West, MPP for Sudbury, and Jennie Stevens, MPP for St. Catharines, for attending and engaging with us on this important part of Ontario’s nuclear industry.
