National Judicial Institute Local reached tentative first agreement

December 18, 2019

The Society’s bargaining team at the National Judicial Institute announced they reached a tentative deal on the local’s first collective agreement on December 3. The two-year deal runs to March 31, 2021.

The bargaining team shared the news with members:

In consideration of NJI’s financial challenges we have agreed to a 2 year collective agreement expiring March 31, 2021.  We have secured an agreement that the Parties will negotiate a proper Band/Step Wage Grid and placing people at the appropriate place on that grid commencing April 1, 2021.

We have been very successful in achieving contract language, including job protections as well as a wage increase of 2.2% retroactive to April 1, 2019. In addition there will be a 1% increase as of April 1, 2020 and another 1% increase as of November 1, 2020.

The local is currently holding its ratification vote.

Staff at the National Judicial Institute joined the Society in 2018. Based in Ottawa, the organization is responsible for providing educational programs and resources to Canada's judiciary.
