Labour Leaders Tour Bruce Power & OPG Nuclear Sustainability Services Facility

July 8, 2024

The Society organized a large tour of the Bruce Power nuclear and OPG’s Nuclear Sustainability Services facility on May 31. The tour included important labour and political leaders, who joined senior representatives of the nuclear industry.

Among the attendees were the President of the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL), the President of Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA), the Ontario Director of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), members of provincial parliament and the Director of Research at the Ontario NDP, the President and the Executive Director of the Ontario Confederation of Faculty Associations (OCUFA), and representatives from the Grey Bruce Labour Council, SMART, UFCW and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA). They were joined by Bruce Power’s leadership team and representatives from Atkins Realis CANDU.

The group toured the control rooms and the reactor, and learned how OPG stores the various levels of nuclear waste, including spent fuel.

These tours are an important part of the Society’s nuclear outreach program, serving as an excellent learning opportunity for stakeholders seeking to expand their understanding of Ontario’s nuclear industry. It has always been the Society’s experience that attendees leave the tour with a much deeper, nuanced and positive understanding of nuclear generation in the province.
