Over the last 150 years, Canadian unions have fought for and won many of the rights we take for granted today. Thanks to unions we have a weekend, shorter workdays, safe workplaces, and parental leave. Though there is still lots of work to do to create fair workplaces, we have come a long way and Labour Day is the time to celebrate our progress.

2022 marks the return of Toronto’s Labour Day parade, which is the largest Labour Day event in Canada. The parade begins on University Avenue north of Queen St. W. and marches to Exhibition Place. Everyone who joins in the Toronto parade from the Society will receive a wristband to enjoy the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) at no cost. Note: the inspectors who keep CNE rides safe are currently on strike. The Society will advise members who attend the Toronto parade whether this strike has been resolved. The OPSEU-represented inspectors are employed by TSSA, which also employs Society-represented engineers who are now in bargaining for a first collective agreement. Supporting the inspectors’ strike will help Society members get a fair deal at the bargaining table!

Society members are welcome to participate in the following Labour Day events hosted by various Labour Councils across Ontario:

  • Toronto March: 9:30AM (SHARP), parade to Exhibition Place beginning on University Ave. north of Queen St. W.
  • Hamilton March: 9:30-10:30AM assemble, 10:30 AM parade to Bay Front Park (BBQ) beginning on Stuart St. at Bay St.
