IFPTE members visit Capitol Hill to save jobs

November 22, 2016

IFPTE Local 3 members Alicia St. John and Rich Squadrito, employed at the Philadelphia Naval Warfare Center, visited the Congressional offices of Senator Bob Casey and Representative Bob Brady this week to inform them of a potential effort to privatize the work of IFPTE represented members.

The meetings took place after Metal Trades Department members, represented by Local 3, were told by management that they intended to privatize at least twenty bargaining unit positions instead of hiring federal workers to perform the work.

As a part of the meetings, Local 3 presented Congressional staff with an April, 2016 Pentagon memorandum stating that the Department of Defense, “continues to be statutorily prohibited by law from converting any work currently performed, or designated for performance, by any number of civilian personnel to private sector (contract) performance.”

Local 3 and IFPTE legislative staff will continue to work with Congressional lawmakers to protect these jobs.
