Fairmont Royal York workers host “The Eras Rally,” demand better wages

December 16, 2024

Society Secretary-Treasurer Laurie Reid represented the Society at a rally organized Nov.14 in support of hotel workers at the Fairmont Royal York, held the first night of Taylor Swift’s Eras tour. The workers, organized with UniteHERE Local 75, have not seen a wage increase since 2021 and are bargaining for fairer pay.  Dubbed “The Eras Rally,” the action drew attention to wage issues amidst skyrocketing hotel prices during the Taylor Swift concert series. More than 300 people attended.

The hotel’s workers, including food service workers, room attendants, and bell persons, are seeking wages that keep up with the cost of living. A spokesperson for the union said that many employees have been forced to take on multiple jobs in order to survive amidst the affordability crisis. According to the union, hotel management has not been bargaining in good faith.
