SOCIETY PENSIONERS' CHAPTER

Introduction

We want to ensure you know about the Society’s new Pensioners’ Chapter and how we are here to help you. Membership of the Chapter is available to any retired member of a bargaining unit, which is represented by the Society of Energy Professionals. As a pensioner, wouldn’t it be wise to keep updated on the status of your pension fund and company-provided benefits and have a means of raising your concerns?

Governance

The prime objective of the Chapter is to further the interests of the Society of Energy Professionals’ pensioners and of the Society itself. Our two primary governance documents are:

We have a Voice

The President of this chapter (or his designate) has a seat on the Executive Board of the Society and the Chapter has two seats on the Society Council. This gives pensioners a voice on issues of concern, such as your health and dental plans, which are at the mercy of negotiations between currently active workers and their employer companies. Dave Jefford and Peter Matthews  attended the November 2, 2008 Society Council Meeting.

Committees

We are establishing the following committees to help us with the work of the Chapter. These are for Membership, Communications, Pensions and Benefits.

The Membership Committee’s job is build up membership and recruit new members so that our Chapter grows and becomes a body representing a significant number of pensioners.

The Communications Committee will focus on how to keep members in the loop by issuing regular updates from the Chapter on issues of concern to members.

The Pensions Committee will look into pension issues and keep members informed on these issues, and make representations, through the Chapter executive, to the Society to protect the members’ interests.

The Benefits Committee will focus on representing the interests on pensioners on maintaining and keeping informed of their benefits.

At the Chapter Executive Committee Meeting on October 17, 2007 the Communications Committee 2007 - 2009 document was approved. The other Executives continue to develop their Committee work programs. Members who indicated an interested in participating one of the Committees have been contacted.

Membership

The annual dues for membership in the Pensioners’ Chapter are currently $24.00. Chapter Dues will be $24.00 for the first year (January to December). The second year will be prorated based on the month joined in the previous year. If a member joins part way through a month, their membership will be effective the start of the next month to the end of December. Third year and onwards are full dues. Payment of dues are effective as of January 1st of the second and succeeding years.

Note: At the November 20, 2008 Chapter Executive Committee meeting, the Chapter Executive was informed that membership fees may not be tax-deductable as they are not associated with union work income. Consequently, the Chapter can no longer issue membership fee receipts for income tax return purposes. The Chapter recommends that members do not include their membership fee receipts as an income tax deduction for the years 2008 and 2009 (if already received). We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.

If you would like to become a member of the Chapter, please complete the application section in the application flyer providing your name, old company, mailing address, home phone and e-mail address if you have one, along with a cheque for $24.00 payable to the Society Pensioners’ Chapter and mail it to the address below.
