Privacy Policy
This is the web-site of the Society of Energy Professionals. We will protect the privacy of all visitors to our web-site to the extent set out in this policy.
Protecting Your Personal Information
The Federal government’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, “The Privacy Act,” took effect on January 1, 2004. The Privacy Act applies to private sector organizations involved in the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information in the course of commercial activity. The Act regulates how personal information is collected and used, but provides that the name, business address, and phone number of the employees of an organization is not personal information. Although the Act does not specifically apply to the Society, as we are not involved in commercial activity, we have decided to use the federal legislation as a guide in order to best protect our members’ personal information.
The nature of the Society’s business requires that we collect, maintain, and use private information about our members on a daily basis, and we strive to do so with the highest standards of confidentiality and security. We use this information to provide representation and services to our members. We do not share information with other organizations for commercial purposes.
On this web-site we collect the personal information you voluntarily provide when you use the web-site, in addition to user traffic information, as set out below. Anyone using our web-site can be secure in the knowledge that we do not use technology that collects personal information about you without your knowledge.
Any personally identifiable data about our web-site visitors is stored securely in accordance with industry standards. However, visitors to our site are personally responsible for the security of the username and password that allows access to the secure portion of our website.
Automatic Collection of Information by this Web-site
The Society web-site will automatically record some general information about your visit, such as:
- the domain you are registered with
- the type of PC operating system you use
- the type of browser you use
This information is used solely to measure and improve our web-site and services. We reserve the right to disclose this non-personal information to third parties such as suppliers, or use it for auditing purposes. This tracking system does not record personal information about individuals or link this information to any personal data collected.
Collection of Information Provided by your Browser and through the Use of Cookies
This site automatically collects information on our server logs from your web browser regarding your use of the site. Examples of information we collect automatically from all visitors include the Internet Protocol (IP) address used to connect your computer to the Internet (this is a unique Internet "address" assigned to a web user by their Internet Service Provider (ISP); computer and connection information such as browser type and version, operating system, and platform; and full Uniform Resource Locator ("URL") click stream data, including the date and time, and content you viewed or searched for on the site.
This site also collects information using "cookies." Cookies are anonymous, unique alphanumeric identifiers sent to your browser from a website’s computers and stored on your computer’s hard drive. The type of information we collect as a result of a cookie being stored on your computer is specific to your computer. We use "session" cookies to collect information about your use of the site (for example, whether you are logged in or not) and so that you may view special content as you browse from page to page. These cookies are temporary and are deleted when you close your browser.
We use "persistent" cookies to allow for automatic login, give you a more personalized browsing experience, and help you navigate the site more efficiently.
You can prevent your browser from accepting new cookies, have the browser notify you when you receive a new cookie, or disable cookies altogether by accessing your browser's preferences menu. If you choose to disable cookies altogether for this site, you can use the site but will not be able to register, login to the site with a personal user name and password, use the search feature, or make use of the advanced personalization features of the site. The basic features and functionality offered to unregistered visitors to the Society site will still be available to you.
We collect and use this information only as anonymous, aggregated user data for the purposes of usage analysis, quality control and administering and improving the site. However, we may review server logs for security purposes, for example, to detect intrusions into our network. The possibility therefore exists that server log data, which contains visitors' IP addresses, could in instances of criminal malfeasance be used to trace and identify individuals. In such instances, raw data logs would be shared with appropriate investigative bodies authorized to investigate such breaches of security.
Ad Servers
We do not partner with or have special relationships with any ad server companies. Any ads that may appear while you are viewing thesociety.ca are unrelated to this site. They may be related to settings in your browser.
